A good driver should always be trying to maximize lateral load at all times. Think about your driving style right after you turn into the corner. Do you wait for the car to point and try to time your acceleration or do you try to consistently maximize rotation and do corrections?

Passive vs. Active Driving

A passive driver is one that waits. If you spend half a second doing nothing, you turn and then you're just waiting for the car to do something for you, you're probably leaving time on the table.

Active driving is generally related to understeer. When you find yourself waiting for things to happen to you mid corner, you're not on the limit. The feeling of being "on rails" generally just means understeer, so feeling on rails is bad.

Understanding Understeer and Oversteer

Understeer means too much steering and less rotation. It's confusing, but important to understand correctly. There are some high level drivers who think that oversteer means oversteer steering angle over, but this is a misconception. Understeer involves turning more of the steering and then holding forward, while oversteer is when the body is tilting one way and the arms are tilting the opposite way.

Some drivers are afraid of oversteer and end up being under the limit or preferring understeer instead, which are driving styles associated with passive driving.

Characteristics of Active Driving

An active driver is constantly adjusting their driving, from initial braking all the way to corner exit, with the car floating on the verge of sliding. However, active driving does not mean chaotic driving. Doing like 7 moves or big moves consistently is of course not ideal. Although we should always be doing something with the car, these inputs should be subtle.
